Border Collie Breed Information
The Border Collie is widely considered to be the most intelligent dog breed in the world. These bright, intense workaholics love to be kept busy and thrive on companionship. Originally bred as herding dogs, Border Collies are beloved for their intense focus, sleek appearance, and active nature. So, it’s perhaps no surprise that they are one of the most popular dog breeds in the world today.
They come in a variety of colors and patterns, but black & white or a tricolor pattern of black, white, and tan are most commonly seen. They can also be Merles—which makes them look very similar to an Australian Shepherd.
They always look alert, with ears perched high atop their heads and often partially folded over on the top. Unlike some working breeds, their tails are left long and bushy—and never stop wagging.
Border Collies are highly trainable, so they excel in herding and agility. They are wonderful family companions, as long as you take the time to ensure that they get plenty of mental and physical stimulation. Border Collies are very devoted to you and your family, always wanting to please.
They are best suited for owners who are just as energetic and active as they are.
If you’ve ever seen a Border Collie herding livestock, you will know that you have witnessed a master craftsman at work. Their stealth and focus are truly breathtaking. Their famous herding eye is a trademark of their breed. The Border Collie’s eyes are always alert and focused. This intense gaze is more than just good looks—their keen vision helps the breed when working in the field. They are known to stare intently into an animal’s eyes, seemingly using mind tricks to control the flock.
Their lifespan is 12–15 years, and they stand 18 to 22 inches at the shoulder, weighing approximately 30 to 55 pounds.
If you like the sound of an intelligent, fun-loving, and energetic dog, then the Border Collie is for you.
